Birmingham United Dominates Grosse Pointe South in Decisive Home Victory
BIRMINGHAM, MI — On a blustery Monday night at Maple Field, the Birmingham United girls varsity lacrosse team proved that not even heavy gusts could slow their momentum. Facing off against a formidable 12-3 Grosse Pointe South squad, United (now 7-3) delivered a commanding 17-9 statement win under the leadership of first-year head coach Kady Waits.
The night got off to a perfect start with a 10-6 JV victory, setting the stage for a varsity performance defined by clinical passing and a relentless offensive attack.
A First Quarter Blitz
Birmingham wasted no time establishing dominance. Coco Jelenic ignited the scoreboard just minutes into the first period, eventually finding the back of the net four times in the opening frame alone. United’s “person-up” execution was particularly lethal, capitalizing on Blue Devil penalties with goals from Ava Krempa, Caitlin O’Guinn, and Jelenic. By the end of the first quarter, Birmingham held a staggering 7-1 lead.
Pressure and Precision
The second quarter saw more of the same as United’s chemistry reached a fever pitch. O’Guinn and Jelenic continued their scoring clinic, fueled by unselfish play and crisp assists from Kasey Chinonis, Elle Kisabeth, and Jane Brush. United entered halftime with a comfortable cushion, having effectively neutralized the Grosse Pointe South transition game.
While the Blue Devils attempted a spirited comeback in the third quarter with a four-goal run, Birmingham remained poised. Jelenic halted the momentum with a timely goal at the 7:26 mark, ensuring the lead stayed intact.
Closing the Door
The fourth quarter featured a defensive masterclass, highlighted by a spectacular save from goalkeeper Maya Forberg with 6:28 remaining. That save served as a catalyst for a final offensive surge. Jordan Schoenberg found the net off a feed from Krempa, followed by back-to-back goals from Elle Kisabeth to put the game out of reach.
As the final whistle blew and the heavy winds finally subsided, the scoreboard reflected a definitive 17-9 victory for the home team.
Making Moves
The win marks a significant milestone for Coach Waits and the United program, which brings together the best talent from both Seaholm and Groves. This victory over a high-ranking opponent signals that Birmingham isn’t just competing—they are emerging as a powerhouse in the shifting landscape of Michigan high school lacrosse.
