A Legacy of Strength and Kindness: Celebrating the Career of Neil Tuomi
After 35 years of dedicated service to Birmingham Public Schools, a true “gentle giant” of the community is stepping away from the mat. On April 25th, the Trimble family hosted a retirement celebration for Neil Tuomi, bringing together generations of former students, parents, colleagues, and fellow coaches to honor a career defined by steady leadership and a profound connection to student-athletes.
A Foundation of Mentorship
Neil Tuomi’s journey with BPS began in 1990. While many know him for his mastery in the wrestling room, his impact spanned across multiple sports and buildings. At Derby Middle School, he was the face of the Derby Dragons football team and a coach for the track program. His influence was so pervasive that Seaholm Athletic Director Aaron Frank noted a recurring phenomenon when middle schoolers transitioned to high school.
“One of my favorite things over all of these years has been to watch the reaction of freshmen when they see Mr. Tuomi in the hallway at Seaholm,” Frank reflected. “They all love him from Derby. When they turn the corner and see him, their faces light up with excitement. The connection is so strong.”
Continuing the Maple Tradition
In 2010, Neil transitioned from a long tenure as an assistant coach to the head of the Seaholm wrestling program. He took the reins following the sudden passing of the legendary Mike Hessling. At the time, Tuomi was clear about his mission: to maintain the culture of excellence Hessling had built while adding his own personal touch.
In a 2010 Birmingham Eccentric article by Marty Budner (reprinted below for readers to review), Tuomi emphasized his philosophy: “I learned from Coach Hess that the kids always come first and foremost. It is about the kids and not the coaches.”
Over the next 16 seasons, that philosophy translated into remarkable success. Under Tuomi’s guidance, the Maples became a dominant force in the MHSAA, at one point securing seven district championships in an eight-year span.
A Family Affair
For Coach Tuomi, the wrestling room was often a family room. He had the unique opportunity to coach his son, Dakota Tuomi (Class of 2015), who became a standout wrestler and multi-sport athlete for the Maples. The Tuomi legacy in Michigan athletics continues through his son, Tobias, who currently serves as the Athletic Director at Garden City High School.
Beyond the wins and losses, Tuomi is remembered for his temperament. Known as a “rock” for the athletic department, his steady and reassuring presence provided a safe harbor for student-athletes navigating the challenges of high school.
The Next Chapter
Having retired from teaching last June, Coach Tuomi stayed on for one final “victory lap” to guide the wrestling program through the 2025-26 season. As he officially hangs up the whistle, he leaves the program in the capable hands of his long-time assistant, Curtis Trimble, who has been named the new head coach.
Neil and his wife, Jenny, are now looking forward to a well-deserved retirement, trading the intensity of the wrestling room for peaceful days on the lake.
To the man who taught, coached, and mentored more than 1,000 Birmingham students: Thank you, Coach Tuomi, for thirty-five years of making us all stand a little taller.
