FALCON NEWS – The art students at Groves High School have transformed their creative talents into a heartwarming community initiative. This fall, the sophomore art class, led by teacher Mrs. Julie Ramirez, crafted a collection of ceramic mugs adorned with vibrant colors and uplifting quotes to bring comfort to those in need across metro Detroit.

Inspired by a desire to give back, the students designed each mug with unique patterns and messages like “You Are Enough” and “Keep Shining.” The class organized a fundraiser, selling handmade bookmarks and prints to purchase coffee and tea supplies. Their efforts raised over $1,200, enough to pair each donated mug with premium beverage materials.

“We wanted to create something meaningful,” said student Maya Cherney. “Knowing our mugs will bring a moment of warmth to someone’s day feels amazing.”

The class donated 75 mugs, along with coffee and tea, to three local shelters: Haven House in Pontiac, Grace Community Shelter in Detroit, and South Oakland Shelter in Royal Oak. Shelter staff expressed gratitude, noting the mugs’ cheerful designs and thoughtful quotes have already brightened their residents’ spirits.

Mrs. Ramirez praised her students’ dedication. “This project combined their artistic skills with compassion,” she said. “They’ve shown how art can make a real difference.”

The Groves art class plans to continue their philanthropy next semester, with ideas for a new project already brewing. Their work serves as a reminder that small acts of creativity can spark big change.
